'Requiem'  — a film by Janet Laurence
This film uses original footage from Northern Pictures of areas affected by the bushfire crisis in Australia, 2020, and music score composed and played by Australia's preeminent digeridoo player, William Barton. Using negatives and inverted colours, in vivid purple hues, of the original footage, this work focuses attention on the stark realities of Australia's threatened bushland.
This film was one of the artworks featured at Biocenosis21 — an international exhibition organised by Art of Change 21 that brought together 14 of the most inspiring French and international contemporary artists committed to biodiversity within the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) World Conservation Congress held in Marseilles, France, September 2021.
Biocenosis (a term introduced into scientific language in 1877 by the German biologist Möbius) is an association of different organisms forming a closely integrated community.  It corresponds to all living beings (animals, plants, fungi, bacteria, etc.) established in the same living space and linked by reciprocal dependence. At a time when biodiversity is collapsing in the face of the destruction of natural spaces and global warming, Art of Change 21 was activating an artistic biocenosis around the challenges of the 21st century. Together, the artists form a community to provoke emotions, exchanges, ideas and engagement.
