Book corner

Every conference has a book corner and here is ours!  The following books by women have featured in our Women's Climate Conversations online series and/or our members bookclub events over the past year, or they are ones that we just like!

In March and April 2021, WCC founding member Toni Hassan made a series of audio recordings to document lived experiences of Black Summer 2019-2020. The women she spoke to live in Canberra and the region.
The recordings transcribed here (with minor edits for clarity) and related artworks form part of Toni's multimedia Honours project in the Sculpture and Spatial Practice workshop of the School of Art and Design at the Australian National University. That project uses voice as sound and language in an attempt to make tangible the effects of climate change on the breath and body.

In the Preface Toni says:
"The project came out of a need to process my own grief about that myth-busting summer and the stubborn roadblocks in the way of attempts to reach a low-carbon future. Listening is at its centre. I was conscious too that lots of people are increasingly experiencing symptoms associated with an emerging phenomenon known as eco-grief, a protracted sadness about a world radically transfigured. However, even in the wake of Black Summer that broke our spell of the illusion of invulnerability, our response to climate change appeared paradoxical. Nearly 80% of Australians recognise it is a concern but rarely discuss it in personal and vulnerable ways.  As the project developed, I became more committed than ever to the idea that humans need stories. Stories have got us here, and stories that elevate our shared hopes will help us get through the tumultuous years ahead."
